Résumé : | This edition of "WEST in EAST" is collection of interior design of the Westerners who took Thailand as their permanent place of residence. In effect, this edition can be considered an adjunct to the previous edition of “Farangs’ Houses in Thailand”. Published in 2001. That previous edition was, in fact, our attempt to appreciate the artistic refinement and sophistication of Western living style as well as to recognize the Westerner’s proficiency in incorporating the Eastern décor into harmonious relevance of their home interior. Definitely, their décor and furnishing concepts shall always reflect the living style handed down by Western traditions but we can still welcome and value the modernism they demonstrated by bringing together the East with the West. In analogy, this is like cuisine in the style of “fusion”, where the original style of recipe, cooking and decorative topping radiates a new aroma of spices and invitation for “guten appetit”. This edition of “WEST in EAST” contains specific style of house furnishing by way of interfusion of diverse cultural heritage, which we can assess as new concept in interior decoration influenced by the Westerners in the midst of us. The transient Westerners, in the past, not only introduced new articles and concept of comfort and luxury to other continents but also gathered the articles and ideas of different exquisiteness from our sides of the world to their continents. For centuries, the Westerners have taken residence in Thailand as their “home” and, besides acclimatizing their physical conditions to adverse temperature and weather against those of their native countries, they had to adjust and adapt their state of mind and conceptual stance in conformity with our set of cultural traditions and habitual living manners. This has never been an easy task, but their determination for integration of their traditions and concepts with those of ours has been extraordinary and astonishing. |
